FAQ for CPOS Users
Accounts
All CPOS users are set up with the following accounts:
- Mail on mail.physics.ucsb.edu
- File access on yosemite2.cpos.ucsb.edu
Dial-in accounts and access to the Physics web server are done as needed.
Send a message to PCS if you need
to use the Physics dial-up modem service or access the Physics web server.
Servers
The main CPOS file server is called Yosemite2.
The full host name is yosemite2.cpos.ucsb.edu
The IP address 128.111.8.236
Windows Shares
The following shares contain resources available to CPOS users:
- CPOS_USERS - This is where CPOS user directories are located.
- CPOS_SHARED - This is where shared directories are located for CPOS users
- WWW - CPOS Webserver
- Printers - CPOS Printers (wawona & volcanoes)
- Profiles - This is where your personal settings are located.
File Storage
- Please store your files on the server and not locally on each computer.
- Do not store files on the desktop, this will slow your login time. If your
profile gets corrupted, you may lose files that were stored on the desktop.
- A shared area is provided so that you can collaborate with your CPOS collegues
without having to send updates through email.
- We will soon have a quota to limit the amount of space you use on the server.
Accessing CPOS Shares & User Files
There are several ways to access your CPOS shares & user files
- Open "My Computer" from the desktop and look for your user directory
called "U:<username> on Yosemite2"
- Through "My Network Places" (aka Network Neighborhood)
- Open "My Network Places" on the desktop
- Open "Entire Network"
- Click "Entire Contents"
- Open "Microsoft Windows Network"
- Open "CPOS" (for CPOS domain)
- Open "Yosemite2"
- Find & Open the share you want to access
- Open CPOS_USERS and to find your user directory
- Open CPOS_SHARED to find folders you can share with your CPOS collegues.
- Using Windows Start & Run
- Go to Start, then select Run
- In the text box type the share you want to access:
- \\yosemite2\CPOS_USERS
- \\yosemite2\CPOS_SHARED
Remote File Access (from UCSB campus computers)
- Using Windows Run
- Go to Windows Start, then select Run
- In the text box type one of the following:
- \\yosemite2.cpos.ucsb.edu\CPOS_USERS
- \\128.111.8.236\CPOS_USERS
- Find your user directory.
Remote Access from Home
Contact PCS if you wish to use the
Physics Dial-up modem service.
File Sharing
The shared access area where you can share files with your CPOS collegues
is called "CPOS_SHARED".
Find your file called <username>-shared.
- Each main user has "full access" to that folder.
You can give other people access to folders within your shared directory (see
instructions below).
Please know that you are able to choose what type of access a person can have.
- You can also select "Read" if you only want a person to read your document
without making changes.
It's up to you to monitor access rights within your CPOS_SHARED folder.
Remember, you can put copies of things you don't want other people to see
in your CPOS_USERS directory.
Adding & Changing Permissions on Files & Folders
Follow these instructions to give other people permission to a shared directory.
- Find your shared directory in \\yosemite2\CPOS_SHARED
- Make a new folder within your shared directory.
- To change access on the new folder, right click on it and select Properties.
- Click on the Security tab.
- Click the "Add" button.
- Find the user's name who will access the folder.
- Click "Add" to add their name, then OK.
- Select the type of control that user should have (ex. Full Control, Modify,
Read, etc.).
Email

- use mail.physics.ucsb.edu for both the incoming & outgoing mail server
- Select IMAP for mail protocol.
- Use the following for root mail path: ~/mail
Email Quota
- You are allowed 50MB of storage for email.
FTP
There is currently no FTP service available for CPOS users. Contact PCS
if you require this for collaboration with collegues outside of UCSB's Physics
Dept.
Printing
The following printers are available:
- volacanoes - This is a color printer.
- wawona - This is a black & white printer in Dr. Heeger's assistant's
office.
Changing Your Password
How to change your password:
- Log on to one of the computers in the CPOS domain
- Select ctrl-alt-delete on the keyboard.
- Click the "Change Password" button.
- Type in your old password.
- Type in your new password, and then type it again to confirm it.
- Click OK
- Click "Cancel" to get back to your session.
- If this does not work, contact PCS.
Networking
If your new desktop computer or laptop needs networking, please fill out the
Request for IP Address
Form.
If you are experiencing network problems on your current computer, email PCS
or call us at x8366.
Policies and Rules
- CPOS users must abide by UCSB
& Physics computing policies including:
- DO NOT misuse any computers or printers.
- DO NOT disconnect any networked devices or change network ports.
- DO NOT plug any networked device into a network port without receiving authorization
from PCS first.
When you Leave CPOS at UCSB
- This form gives us instructions on what to do with your files.
- If we do not receive any instructions, we will remove all of your computer
accounts and files.
