Configuring SecureW2 Client for Windows 2000
for the Physics Wireless Network

  1. Configure your wireless card to use DHCP to obtain TCP/IP network settings.
  2. Fill out the IP Address Request Form for your wireless card.
Special items to note on the form in the Comments section:
    1. Specify that you are using a wireless card. Be sure you are providing the MAC address of the wireless card and not the ethernet interface. Here is information on how to find your MAC address.
    2. Specify a username/password combination for use with wireless. If you are already using the Physics dial-up modems, you will use this username/password.
    3. Specify the name of your machine if it has already been on the Physics network. If your machine has never been on the Physics network, we will need to scan your machine for security vulnerabilities behind our firewall in PCS. (HEP users can disregard this step, as you will be connected to the HEP network automatically based on your username and password.)
  3. Download the SecureW2 client.
  4. Extract the SecureW2 folder before installing. This is very important, otherwise the setup may fail.

You can use the built-in Windows zip functionality to extract the files by right-clicking on the zip file and choosing "Extract All..."

If you have WinZip installed, the "Extract All..." option may not be available, instead right-click on the file and choose "WinZip->Extract To...
  5. Navigate to the extracted files and launch the SecureW2 installer.

The SecureW2 Install Wizard appears. Click "Next" to continue.

Read the SecureW2 license agreement and click "I Agree" to continue.

Click "Install" to begin the SecureW2 installation

At this point you should see a window titled "SecureW2 - PreConfigure"

  6. Fill in the "SecureW2 - Preconfigure" information before clicking OK.

  7. Fill out the Username, Password, and Re-enter password fields. The "Domain" field should be left empty.
  8. Click "OK" to finish the installation.

Once the installation completes, you will be prompted to reboot the computer. Please reboot the computer before continuing.

  1. To configure the network, right click on the wireless network connection in the system tray, and choose "View Available Wireless Networks". From the left column of the "Wireless Network Connection" window, choose "Change advanced settings". Click on the "Wireless Networks" tab. In the "Preferred networks" section of the window, click the "Add..." button. This will begin the steps necessary to add the network.
  2. Type "physics" into the "Network name (SSID):" box.
  3. Click on the "Authentication" tab. Ensure that the "Enable IEEE 802.1X authentication for this network" checkbox is turned on. Choose "SecureW2" from the "EAP type:" menu option. Uncheck the "Authenticate as a computer when computer information is available" checkbox.
  4. Click on the EAP type "Properties" button. You should now see the "SecureW2 Profile" window.
  5. Choose "Wireless" for connection type. Be sure the only the following items are checked:
  6. Click the User Setup tab.
  7. Uncheck "Prompt User for Credentials"
  8. Fill in your wireless username and password in the proper fields.
  9. Click "OK" to exit each of the wireless property boxes.
  10. Your computer should now be configured with SecureW2 to authenticate to the physics wireless network.
