ÒThe Hydrophobic Interaction and Hydrogen Bonding NetworksÓ

Phil Pincus

Abstract

The fact that oil and water are not miscible is a consequence of the hydrophobic interaction.  This force has remained somewhat mysterious but is normally associated with disruption of the hydrogen bonding network of water.  I shall describe a toy model for this effect that is inspired by the Hubbard model for correlated electron systems.
