Andy Howell, adjunct professor of physics at UCSB and staff scientist at Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT), wrote a review article about Type Ia supernovae, published recently in Nature Communications. This special category of stars can be used to help measure dark energy.
