Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Abstract:

I will describe my experiences performing research at Lawrence Livermore Lab over a 17+ year period. I will also talk more broadly about the full spectrum of what scientists and engineers do at this institution.

Throughout, I will try to highlight:

  1. The idiosyncratic features of the Lab and its cultures
  2. The manner(s) by which folks move through the institution (postdocs --> staff scientist --> etc.)
  3. How the institution fits into the framework of national labs, generally
  4. My personal impressions regarding potential differences and similarities with the research cultures at academic and industrial settings
