Optical atomic clocks, based on trapped ions or neutral atoms in optical lattices, have greatly improved in accuracy over the last decade and may soon contribute to a re-definition of the SI second. However, clocks are good for more than just keeping time. In particular, optical clocks can be used to build a gravitational wave telescope for wavelengths beyond the reach of interferometric detectors. I will discuss this motivation for developing robust and precise clocks, and describe ongoing work in my group to build a solid-state optical atomic clock.
