Quantum parallelism promises to unlock information processing capabilities which can efficiently solve problems that are not feasible on classical computers. However, this tantalizing prize can only be obtained once we overcome the technical challenges involved in constructing a scalable and fault-tolerant quantum computing platform. I will discuss topological phases of matter and explain how they may be utilized to overcome the obstacles to implementing a quantum computer.
