The nature of the dark matter remains one of the outstanding questions in modern science. In the LUX (for Large Underground Xenon) experiment, we seek a signal due to the interaction of dark matter particles with Xenon atoms in our laboratory, which is one mile underground in South Dakota. I'll describe the LUX experiment, where the first data run is imminent, and general aspects of the detection of dark matter.
