April, 2008: UCSB Physics ranks among the Top Ten Graduate Schools in US World News and Report.
March 17, 2008: The faculty Senate has bestowed its highest honor on David Awschalom, an internationally recognized researcher who is a professor of physics and of electrical and computer engineering at UCSB. Awschalom was named Faculty Research Lecturer for 2008 on March 6. In announcing the award, the UCSB Academic Senate said Awschalom “has made remarkable contributions to our campus in the fields of physics and engineering.”

The ring was found by an international team of astronomers led by Raphael Gavazzi and Tommaso Treu of the UCSB. The discovery is part of the ongoing Sloan Lens Advanced Camera for Surveys (SLACS) program. The team is reporting its results at the 211th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Austin, Texas. A paper has been submitted to The Astrophysical Journal.
