April 2009: Stan Peale was elected as one of the 72 new members of the National Academy of Sciences, in recognition of his key contributions to planetary science.
April 2009: David Awschalom is principal investigator for research projects aimed at utilizing diamond for quantum communication processing. Two government funding agencies are putting $6.1 million towarrds the projects. UCSB is leading the charge on both efforts, due to dramatic developments in quantum physics in the past decade at the university.
March 2009: UC Santa Barbara senior Tobias Mansuripur, a physics major in the College of Creative Studies, is one of 14 science and engineering students in the nation to receive a prestigious Winston Churchill Scholarship to pursue graduate studies at the University of Cambridge in England.

February 2009: Five UC Santa Barbara professors -- including Alan Heeger -- will share a $2.1 million grant with scientists from University of Cambridge as part of Science Bridges, a project announced by Research Councils UK (RCUK).
January 2009: Alan Heeger discussed low-cost, highly efficient plastic solar cells at the University of Utah's Frontiers of Science lecture on January 29.
January 2009: A team of NASA-funded scientists, including Phil Lubin, have discovered cosmic radio noise, from data collected from a NASA balloon.
