Chemistry is concerned with the transformation of molecules. In order for two molecules to react, it is necessary for them to be spatially close to each other. Furthermore, molecules are depicted as collections of spatially arranged atoms, joined to each other by sticks of different lengths and angles, as well as full and dashed lines to describe the nature of the chemical bonds. These representations have guided our thinking, understanding, and teaching of the molecular properties and functions.
Spatially resolved measurements by the scanning tunneling microscope of the chemical interactions and the imaging of molecular structure and bonds enable real space visualization that reduces abstractness and simultaneously enables new understanding of chemistry.
