Shawn Kolitch, PhD (Intellectual Property Attorney)
Only around 3% of those earning a bachelor’s degree in physics, and perhaps 14% of new PhDs, are likely to become tenure-track physics faculty. In this talk, Shawn Kolitch, an alumnus of the UCSB graduate physics program, will discuss intellectual property (IP) law as an option for the remaining 97% of those earning physics degrees. Shawn will use a fictitious product called the “Banana Bike” as a vehicle to provide a brief introduction to IP law, with an emphasis on why physics is a particularly useful and sought-after background. Shawn will describe his own career path and other possible ways to explore IP law as a career.
