The bars are very long metal tubes that were purchased many years ago from an oil field supply place. They are usually stored in the loft on the far end of the commons. You may have to annoy F&H into giving you a key, because although Venora has traditionally had a copy of the key, F&H has become more annoying recently and she might not have one.
The problem with the loft was always that really annoying people seem to use it for salt shaker throwing practice. The salt shakers explode upon hitting the back wall of the loft and shower salt over everything stored there. I finally tried to fix this problem last year (94) by hanging a pair of blue plastic tarps over the top of the loft, in such a way that they can't be seen from the commons below. You should see them as soon as you get in the loft, and they can be unhooked on one side by merely taking the eyelets off the screws I put up there.
The second thing that I accomplished last year was to rust proof the bars. As you can imagine the bars were absolutely dripping with rust after years of this salt treatment. I purchased some black rustproofing paint which you may need to find in order to touch up the paint job, and applied it after scrapping all the yucky rust off. Hopefully this stuff is working, but only time will tell.
Rust was on lots of other stuff too, but there is not a whole lot that can be done about some of it. All I can say is keep those tarps in good shape and try to get rid of any salt you find as soon as possible.
