Course Information

Final Exam:
Here is some important information about the final exam as well as a practice final exam.
Meeting Time:
Lectures are Monday, Wednesday, Friday 1:00-1:50 in Broida 1610. There are four discussion sections:
  • 36608: Monday 11:00-12:50 in HSSB 3202
  • 36558: Monday 5:00-6:50 in HSSB 1207
  • 36566: Tuesday 5:00-6:50 in HSSB 4201
  • 36582: Wednesday 5:00-6:50 in HSSB 3202
Attendence at your discussion section is required, starting with the first week of classes. At the beginning of each discussion section, you will work in groups of two or three to solve that week's discussion section problem, which counts towards your course grade.
Course Materials
Textbook: Young & Freedman University Physics, 12th edition, Pearson Addison-Wesley, 2008.
Homework website: Access to the MasteringPhysics website to accompany Young & Freedman, 12th edition. (A two-year license is provided with each new copy of the textbook; licenses can also be purchased separately.)
Note: We will not use the i>clicker in Physics 1, but it is likely to be used in the later courses in the sequence (which will use the same textbook).

Homework assignments are available from the MasteringPhysics website. In addition, various course materials (such as discussion section problems, homework solutions, and exam solutions) will be distributed on the Sakai website. (To use the Sakai website, log on with your UCSBnetID, and then select the PHYSICS_001_001_10 workspace. The course materials are available under Resources.)
Homework:
There will be weekly homework assignments, which must be completed on the MasteringPhysics website. These assignments will generally be due on Sunday night at 11:50 p.m. The first week, there is an additional assignment to help you learn the MasteringPhysics system, due Thursday April 3 at 11:59 p.m..
Getting Help:
The Physics Study Room in Broida 1019 is open weekdays from 8 am until 4:30 pm.
The Campus Learning Assistence Center (CLAS) offers group tutorials for Physics 1.
Exams:
There will be two midterm exams and a final exam.
The midterm exams will be held on Monday, April 21 and Wednesday, May 21. You are allowed to bring a calculator and a double-side single page of notes to each midterm exam, and to the final exam.
The final exam will be held during the scheduled exam period of Wednesday, June 11, 4-7 pm.
Grading:
Homework, 20%
Discussion section problems, 5%
Midterm exams, 20% each
Final exam, 35%

This course is not graded on a curve. Your final grade will be determined by the percentage of points you earn in the various components of the course, according to the following scheme:
≥ 95% A+
≥ 90% A
≥ 85% A-
≥ 80% B+
≥ 75% B
≥ 70% B-
≥ 65% C+
≥ 60% C
≥ 55% C-
≥ 45% D
< 45% F
