Courage (Living Free) Artist: Glen Phillips Tabbed by Carlo Medina (as of April 14, 2003) Capo 9 (I finally counted) I am working totally off of Largo show memory, I have no recordings to base either my lyrics or my tabs on so I welcome all corrections! Two more recent shows have helped me make some corrections to the original document. G 320033 Dsus2/F# 200233 (notated as D/F#) Cadd9 x32033 (notated as C9) Em7 022033 Dsus 000233 A7sus4 x02030 Em7 x20030 Basically the chords go G -> Dsus2/F# -> Cadd9 for the verses with a variation of the A7sus4 -> Em7 -> Cadd9 for the last line of each verse Have to listen to the song for the timing as the chords come in odd intervals with the words (hard to notate this way) NOTE – because of space considerations I will notate Dsus2/F# as “D/F#”; Cadd9 as “C9”; A7sus4 as “A7” Live version note – I’ve noticed that sometimes Glen doesn’t sing the first “Bring my courage back...” chorus after the first verse, he just does a couple of bars of the G -> D/F# -> C9 and then goes straight into the second verse. Okay, here goes... G D/F# C9 (x2) G D/F# C9 At the start of the conversation G D/F# C9 I didn’t have much to say G D/F# C9 I was looking for some inspiration G D/F# C9 You just got in my way G D/F# C9 Took a shot at an easy target G D/F# C9 You were too stunned to say anything G D/F# C9 You were the unsuspecting martyr A7 Em7 C9 You were not the most dangerous game G D/F# Em7 Dsus Bring my courage back now C9 G Bring it back to me G D/F# Em7 Dsus Tired of being afraid of what I can’t change C9 And I want to be living free Em7 Dsus C9 I don’t want to be a prisoner I want to live free G D/F# C9 (x2), then back into the verses like the first time Well it could be I was mistaken Could be that I deceived myself But it’s hard to understand somebody Who doesn’t want to understand himself There’s an ocean of unlatched windows (could be “notion” not “ocean”) And a world of unlocked homes The only reason anybody still feels safe Is most people still knock on the door Bring my courage back now Bring it back to me Tired of being afraid of what I can’t change And I want to be living free I don’t want to be a prisoner (x3 or...) (bound in these chains) – Glen started singing these two lines (a slave to my fears) - at later shows, using same progression as before Just want to be living free Bridge uses (as far as I can tell) Am7 x02010 G 320033 Cadd9 (C9) x32033 Dsus xx0233 Am7 G Though we all return to dust (*or is it “though the old”?) C9 There’s a lot of us Dsus In an awful rush to (then as before) By the end of the inquisition I was brought back from the brink Torquemada and a couple of friends got together All went out for drinks Left me here in this empty dungeon While they’re living it up downtown As if they never even existed Doesn’t make much difference now Bring my courage back now Bring it back to me Tired of being afraid of what I can’t change And I want to be living free I don’t want to be a prisoner (x3 or...) (afraid of these chains) (slave to my fears) Just want to be living free Well some take the road to Damascus Some take the road to hell I’ll take highway 1 to the evergreens And everything will turn out well
