David AwschalomDAVID AWSCHALOM NAMED AS JOINT RECIPIENT OF THE IUPAP MAGNETISM PRIZE FOR 2003

Professor Awschalom is a recipient of the IUPAP 2003 Magnetism Prize.  This prestigious award will be presented in Rome, at the International Conference on Magnetism to be held from 27 July - 1st August 2003.

The citation is as follows: The IUPAP Magnetism Prize for 2003 is awarded to Gabriel Aeppli (UK), David Awschalom  (USA), and Hideo Ohno (Japan) for their outstanding achievements in magnetism of quantum electron systems.  Aeppli has pioneered the study of magnetic correlations by neutron scattering, demonstrating the ubiquity of antiferromagnetic correlations in paramagnets and superconductors; Awschalom has done ground-breaking work with femtosecond optical methods to reveal both spatial and temporal aspects of spin dynamics in a broad variety of semiconductors:  Ohno has developed new types of ferromagnetic semiconductors which have facilitated some key aspects of spin electronics.

The role that IUPAP plays:
The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) was established in 1922 in Brussels with 13 Member countries and the first General Assembly was held in 1923 in Paris.

The aims of the Union are:
to stimulate and promote international cooperation in physics; to sponsor suitable international meetings and to assist organizing committees; to foster the preparation and the publication of abstracts of papers and tables of physical constants; to promote international agreements on other use of symbols, units, nomenclature and standards; to foster free circulation of scientists; to encourage research and education.

The Union is governed by its General Assembly which meets every three years. The Council is its top executive body, supervising the activities of the eighteen specialized International Commissions and three Affiliated Commissions.

As one of the basic sciences, physics relates to all branches of natural science. Many of the most exciting developments take place in the border areas between different disciplines. To cover interdisciplinary activities IUPAP maintains close liaison with several of the other Unions. In some cases this collaboration is manifested in the form of associate members of IUPAP Commissions. The Union also participates in many of the ICSU Inter-Union Commissions and global projects.

The Union is composed of Members representing identified physics communities. At present 46 Members adhere to IUPAP.

The IUPAP Prize in Magnetism, established by the International Commission on Magnetism, is given no more than once every three years, and has been awarded most recently to:

1991 to Professor A. J. Freeman;
1994 to Drs A. Fert and P. Grunberg;
1997 to Professor R. J. Birgeneau.
