I will describe two high-risk approaches to two hard problems. Spectroscopy of crystal defects, such as NV centers in diamond, may allow direct detection of WIMP dark matter below the neutrino floor. Precision measurement of stellar accelerations, using radial velocity spectroscopy techniques developed for exoplanet astronomy and depending on the astro-comb wavelength calibrator, may enable direct mapping of the local dark matter density in the Milky Way. If successful, the latter may inform the prospects for the former.
