Title: Nobel Prize Spotlight: Detecting Astrophysical Neutrinos at the South Pole
Abstract:
This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Francis Halzen “for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.” In this colloquium, we will introduce the field of neutrino astrophysics and how the IceCube detector has enabled the observation of high-energy neutrinos originating from outside the Milky Way using a cubic kilometer of Antarctic ice as a detector.
