Shreyas is a Ph.D. student in Ania Jayich's group working on building and manipulating coupled quantum systems on or near diamond surfaces. He uses nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers (a workhorse qubit system found in many labs) that are embedded nanometers below the edge of the diamond lattice to probe the physics of interacting spin systems just above the surface. In doing so, he hopes to help design interfaces that enable controllable coupling between quantum systems that have different properties (e.g. easy-to-observe, isolated NV centers and hard-to-observe, interacting spins deposited on the diamond surface).
